With 25,000 registered runners, the Copenhagen Half Marathon was sold out for the first time ever this year. In the beginning of December, entries opened for the 6th annual CPH Half, and during the first week, the number of entrants had increased by 126% compared to 2019.
Organizers therefore expects the 2020 event to sell out weeks before race day.
Significant increase of international runners
Moreover, the country demographics of the runners, who have signed up for 2020 event, look remarkably different than previous years.
The share of international runners has gone up significantly from 27.5 to 41.7 percent. In the very first edition of the CPH Half held in 2015, the share of international runners was a mere 10.1 percent.
The increase in international participants is most likely due to the new, international running series called, SuperHalfs, which the Copenhagen Half Marathon, has formed together with the four European top half marathons of Lisbon, Prague, Cardiff and Valencia. The SuperHalfs series will kick off in March 2020, thus making CPH Half the third SuperHalfs event of 2020.
“With the new international running series, we expect to see an even more international runners coming to run in our capital city, Copenhagen. With the event being sold out this year, we believe that we will sell out in 2020 too,” says Dorte Vibjerg, CEO of Sparta Athletics & Running, who together with the Danish Athletics Federation is organizing the Copenhagen Half Marathon.
World record has put CPH Half on the world map
The CPH Half also made big news, when in September this year, the three-time World Champion Geoffrey Kamworor broke the world half marathon record in the streets of Copenhagen. Undoubtedly, the increasing numbers of international entrants is an effect of this.
The 6th Copenhagen Half Marathon will be held on September 13, 2020, and the maximum capacity is 25,000 runners. Registrations are open at cphhalf.com
