The exhibition delves into the deeply personal experiences of the artists during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, exploring themes of war, longing for peace and security, survival, and hopes for a brighter future. It aims to visualize the unique experiences of artists who were confronted with the horrors of war. While wartime is often characterized by harshness, fear, and hatred, it also reveals boundless courage, empathy, and a profound sense of love that, for many, served as a “bomb shelter” in the midst of turmoil.
How did I get to the bomb shelter invites viewers to contemplate the paths that led the artists to their personal shelters and to consider the broader questions of what can be rebuilt and recreated once the war is over, how to find peace during these challenging times, and how to nurture hope for the future.
The artworks on display explore these themes through various media and dimensions. Visitors to the exhibition will be immersed in the abstract history of Ukraine, offering an opportunity to connect with the moments before and after the war. It encourages viewers to ponder the extent of what can be preserved in the face of destruction and how to sustain hope in the most challenging of circumstances.
Ukraine House in Denmark – a young Ukrainian cultural diplomacy and civil society organization with a mission to foster robust Danish-Ukrainian intercultural dialogue, promote Ukraine’s cultural heritage, contemporary culture, and creative entrepreneurship – is proud to announce the opening of How did I get to the bomb shelter, its fourth exhibition since the launch in Gammel Dok in February 2023.
