The Sustainable Travel Competition of Matka Nordic Travel Fair invites all companies and operators participating in the Travel Fair to the competition. The competition rewards those companies in the business that have taken steps to enable people working in the tourism industry to continue to earn a living despite the pandemic and travel restrictions, and that the industry continues to survive and attract tourists both to Finland and from Finland to foreign destinations.
Solutions that can be rewarded are, for example, creative solutions for employing staff and maintaining livelihoods, developing virtual travel, remote work or sustainability concepts, working for health safety on site or significant advocacy for the travel industry.
The competition is open to all exhibitors in the Matka Nordic Travel Fair. There are two series: companies and other tourism operators.
The competition jury will select the companies that advance to the finals. The final will be seen at Matka Nordic Travel Fair on Friday 21 January, when competitors contend for superiority in the pitching competition. The Finnish Fair Foundation supports the competition with a prize of 6,000 €.
Members of the jury are Chairman Timo Saranpää from SMAL’s Responsible Tourism Working Group, Director Liisa Mäkelä from Visit Finland, Senior Lecturer and Green-Key Expert Minna-Maari Harmaala from Haaga-Helia, Visit Oulu’s Managing Director Yrjötapio Kivisaari, Helsinki City Tourism Director Nina Vesterinen and Marketing and Communications Director Maria Mroue from Messukeskus.
“In the first responsibility competition, we emphasized the environmental impact, now responsibility is also considered from the economic and social responsibility perspective. The travel industry is currently recovering from a severe crisis. It is great to highlight travel companies that have tackled Covid-19 challenges. Through the competition, we will hear about survival stories that will help the entire industry to recover,” says Timo Saranpää, Chairman of the jury, representing SMAL’s Responsibility Working Group.
” Matka Nordic Travel Fair has announced its ambitious goal of being the most responsible travel event in the world. In addition to the Sustainable Travel Competition, responsibility is reflected in the fair’s theme areas as well as the programme and services. Messukeskus has taken significant steps in energy saving and waste recovery, aims for 110% carbon neutrality within ten years and was the first Nordic event house to receive Covid-19 certification for its responsibility in health safety. Messukeskus is also committed to promoting responsible tourism with its Helsinki Declaration 2.0 signature,” says Lumia Ankkuri, Business Manager of Matka Nordic Travel Fair.
